Top 3 Movie Sequels
Sequels are sometimes dangerous territory. Depending on why you are choosing to do a sequel can make all the difference. Some studios churn out quick sequels just to satisfy fans and to keep the franchise alive. Others plan a sequel before the movie is even released, hoping for a good reception but not basing the idea of a sequel on it. Just like in music, the “sophomore slump” as they call it, can apply to movie sequels as well. Here are three great examples of sequels that buck the tradition and break the sophomore slump.
The Empire Strikes Back
My personal favorite in the Star Wars trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back is the perfect middle film, slightly more preachy, a little less action, but no less riveting than the first and last films in the trilogy. “The Empire Strikes Back” is the perfect example of a great sequel that builds on the character development of the first film and perfectly segues into the big finale of “Return of the Jedi.”
The Dark Knight
Christopher Noland’s dark reboot of the Batman series reached its peak with “The Dark Knight” the moody, cynical, dystopian Batman film fans have always believed and hoped would one day be made. The death of Heath Ledger added even more emotional weight to the story and made the film one of the highest grossing and critically acclaimed movies ever, not bad for a movie based on a comic book.
Aliens
It’s always a risky move to transition from one director to the next in a movie series, but the then young James Cameron gave the “Alien” franchise a slightly tweaked look turning outward from the first films claustrophobic final girl to her role as mother and hero amidst a threatened human population where there are no Mustang parts or edible food.. James Cameron made his mark with “Aliens” and gave cinematic history of the greatest sequels ever made.
